A paper clip is a small, typically metal, device used for fastening together sheets of paper. It is designed in the form of a wire bent into a loop or series of loops to hold the papers without damaging them. The most common shape is a double loop, but there are variations like the triangular or curved designs.

Key Characteristics:

Material: Most paper clips are made of steel or another flexible metal, which gives them strength and the ability to return to their original shape after being bent.
Shape: The classic design is a small, elongated, wire-based form with a simple loop that holds paper together. Some may have additional features like coatings for protection against rust.
Size: Paper clips come in various sizes, ranging from small clips that hold a few sheets of paper to larger ones that can hold thicker stacks.
Function: The main purpose is to hold multiple sheets of paper together temporarily, providing a simple, reusable solution without the need for holes or adhesive.
Design: A paper clip typically operates by squeezing the sides of the wire together, allowing it to slide over the papers and then hold them tightly.

History:

The paper clip has been in use for over a century. Its design is generally attributed to the Norwegian inventor Johan Vaaler, although similar designs existed before. The paper clip became popular in the 20th century due to its simple and effective design.
