In the 2013-14 season, Jan Vertonghen was a crucial part of Tottenham Hotspur’s defense. The Belgian defender, known for his versatility, primarily operated as a center-back but was also deployed as a left-back when needed due to his technical ability and composure on the ball. Vertonghen had already established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League by this point, with his ability to read the game, make timely tackles, and contribute to build-up play from the back.

Despite Tottenham's inconsistency that season, which saw the team finish 6th in the Premier League and go through managerial changes—first André Villas-Boas and then Tim Sherwood—Vertonghen remained a key figure in defense. He made 23 appearances in the league, although his season was hampered by a couple of injuries. Vertonghen's leadership at the back and his calmness under pressure were essential as Spurs sought European qualification, securing a spot in the UEFA Europa League.

Though Tottenham didn’t win any silverware that year, Vertonghen’s performances were a highlight, as he continued to cement his reputation as one of the Premier League's top defenders.
